Our research team at PR Army conducted an in-depth analysis of over 100 materials from leading Ukrainian and international scholars, supplemented by media publications. Employing interpretive methods and OSINT tools, we examined historical myths imbued with ideological bias, exposing how Kremlin propagandists weaponize these narratives in their ongoing information war against Ukraine. The study spanned the period from the formation of Rus to Russia's current military aggression.
This initiative, sponsored by NATO, culminated in a presentation at NATO headquarters in Brussels, where our co-founder, Anastasiia Marushevska, participated in the conference titled “Countering the Russian Manipulation of History and False Historical Narratives.” She contributed to a roundtable discussion alongside:
- Andrii Portnov, Professor of Entangled History of Ukraine, European University
- Viadrina & Head of the Research Network Prisma Ukraïna
- Maria Domańska, Senior Fellow, Russian Department, Centre for Eastern Studies (OSW)
- Moderator: Dominik P. Jankowski, Policy Planning Unit, Office of the Secretary General, NATO
The panel explored Russia’s deployment of fabricated historical narratives to justify its war against Ukraine. Discussions highlighted the importance of raising awareness about these tactics, understanding their mechanisms, and building resilience against their impact. Strategies to counter such narratives, including the use of oral history methods, were also central to the dialogue. The event was part of the NATO-Ukraine Platform on Countering Hybrid Warfare, established in 2016 to facilitate collaboration on addressing Russian hybrid tactics. This platform develops tools to enhance resilience and counter Russia’s manipulation of history as a weapon in its broader strategy of aggression.
